Blue Ridge Marathon Announces Foot Levelers as Title Sponsor

New partnership will extend the reach of
“America’s Toughest Road Marathon”

Organizers of the Blue Ridge Marathon, America’s Toughest Road Marathon, today announced that Roanoke-based Foot Levelers has signed on as the new title sponsor for the event.

The race, with more elevation change than any other on-road marathon in the United States, will be known as the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon through at least 2015.

“We are looking forward to our new partnership with Foot Levelers,” said marathon chair Pete Eshelman.  “Foot Levelers already has great connections in the running world by virtue of its products.  We expect to be able to use those connections to take the message of the Roanoke event farther than we have in the past.”

"We are so excited to be the title sponsor of America's Toughest Road Marathon," said Kent Greenawalt, CEO of Foot Levelers.  "Foot Levelers has a lot of activities planned to create awareness about the race nationally and focus on the runners' overall health.  Runners know the importance of taking care of their bodies from the ground up and we plan to motivate and help all participants perform at their maximum ability as they run over the Blue Ridge mountains."

Bill Rodgers will speak at the
pre-race pasta dinner!
Foot Levelers, a major sponsor of the 2012 event, bringing in running great Bill Rodgers to speak at the pre-race pasta dinner and at the race start, will work with the marathon committee to enhance the reach of advertising in national and regional running publications and trade publications, as well as online and social media outlets.  The company’s in-house graphic design team will also help create materials for trade shows and other events.  They are also working with the committee to develop a number of other unique marketing initiaves.

“Foot Levelers makes a product that improves people’s total body wellness by supporting their feet.  They have specific orthotics for runners and other active people – and they are based in Roanoke,” Eshelman said. “This is a perfect fit.”

The Blue Ridge Marathon: Are You Ready?

Runners, are you looking for a BIGGER challenge?  Here’s an offer just for you!
Picture this -- a cool breeze at your back, the scent of blossoming flowers, “purple mountain’s majesty” in front of you…and the SEARING pain in your quads with each and every stride down this effing mountain!
Don’t come to Roanoke, Virginia to enjoy a relaxing weekend; come to see just how much the National College Blue Ridge Marathon can kick your butt.

If you’re one of the growing population of marathoners seeking challenging marathons to test your mental and physical endurance, you may have noticed a rivalry quickly building between the National College Blue Ridge Marathon in Roanoke, Virginia and the TMC Mount Lemmon Marathon in Tucson, Arizona.  Both races claim to be America’s toughest road marathon.

When organizers of the Blue Ridge Marathon learned about Mount Lemmon’s claim they issued a challenge to “let the runners decide which is tougher”, and they backed their challenge by offering free entries into their race to anyone who had just completed the Mount Lemmon Marathon.

About 20 runners accepted the offer and hit the pavement this past April. After the race, organizers showed some southern hospitality by treating the Mount Lemmon runners to breakfast at Thelma’s Chicken and Waffles.  Those who know Thelma’s would argue this was a bribe…and that may be the case. Regardless after experiencing 26.2 miles of elevation change, pounding rain and hail, and a course that trekked through the downtown area, followed a river, climbed the mountain, and took runners back down the mountain, runners were asked to share their experience.  Here’s what they had to say:

Congrats to Brad Rennick, the Winner of A Free Entry to
the Blue Ridge Marathon!
And a big thanks to the Blue Ridge Marathon race director for providing such an awesome giveway for the blog!

Win An Entry to the 2011 Blue Ridge Marathon in April!

Looking for a marathon that'll put a feather in your cap? Then the Blue Ridge Marathon on April 16th in Roanoke, VA is just the marathon for you!

Local runners have crafted one of the most challenging and beautiful marathons on the east coast. In 2010 the full marathon course included 3,076 feet of total elevation gain and 6,140 feet of total elevation change, but that just wasn’t enough. The 2011 course includes 3,620 feet of total elevation gain and 7,234 feet of total elevation change.  Kind of gives new meaning to runner’s high.

The uphill portions will test each runner’s strength and endurance while the equally challenging downhill sections are sure to weed out those who are unprepared. The breathtaking views and stunning Blue Ridge Mountain scenery will offer some reprieve to runners as they persevere to the finish line! Are you up for the challenge of America’s Toughest Road Marathon?

Check out what Ronny Angell, race director of the Blue Ridge Marathon, had to say about this unique spring marathon.

Looking for a Beautiful and Challenging 2010 Marathon?

If you're not registered and currently in training for one of the many upcoming fall marathons, then it's probably too late. But, if you're starting to ponder running a spring 2010 marathon, you may want to consider the Blue Ridge Marathon On The Parkway in Roanoke, VA (April 24, 2010). If you're looking for a challenging course, this is the race for you. The course begins and ends in downtown Roanoke. In between, runners will enter the Blue Ridge Parkway, where they'll make three significant climbs and descents.

The course begins easy enough with about a mile of rolling hills before it begins the 2-mile climb up Mill Mountain where at the top the race enters the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is here where runners will encounter several lengthy and challenging hills over the next 2-3 miles. Then comes the most challenging (and most beautiful) part of the run—climbing Roanoke Mountain.

During the 780 feet up Roanoke Mountain (over 2 miles), runners will see beautiful views of the region's mountains and valleys. The run down Roanoke Mountain is just as beautiful and just at challenging.

I don't want to give all the race's secrets away, so check out the website for more details on the course, travel info, registration info, and post race events.

Proceeds from the Blue Ridge Marathon will benefit the FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway. FRIENDS is a non-profit, volunteer organization that is dedicated to preserving and protecting the Blue Ridge Parkway, a national treasure. FRIENDS programs focus on preservation, protection and education.

So, you've got plenty of time to build that mileage base and get in shape for this challenging race! If you've run a challenging marathon or one in a beautiful location, I'd love to hear about it. Email the name of the race and link (if possible) to RunnerDude at runnerdudeblog@yahoo.com. Be sure to put "Challenge/Beauty" in the subject line.

Happy Running!
